The whole world knows about Steve Jobs, but for some he was just the founder of the multinational company Apple. Well if your knowledge about him has certain limitations, then you need to know these 8 facts about Steve Jobs who changed the way you see the world today:
1) Dropped out of college
He dropped out of Reed College in Portland just after his first semester to pursue his dream. He had a very low GPA there that of just 2.65. Jobs never disagreed with the value of higher education but had said it comes at the expense of experience. Later he did attend classes of calligraphy informally as that is what attracted him which later encouraged fonts and typography in Apple products. Moreover, it got popular all over the globe as well.
“I want to spend my parent’s money to get a degree and become something as forgettable as an electrician”
At last he unveils that knowledge is much more important than getting a degree.
2) Began his journey from a Garage
Yes don’t be surprised, the multinational company Apple started from a garage, Jobs and Woz along with their fellow team mates began to work together in a garage at his own house as they couldn’t afford a fancy building at that time. Time flew, and now Apple is all around the world with gigantic infrastructures.
This picture above is the garage where all the magic originated.
Now, let’s have a look at the present Apple Headquarter known as Apple Campus that is in California.
3) The first ready-to-go personal computer was introduced by Steve Jobs
Jobs and team first came with the Apple I in 1976 which was a kit computer, the consumer had to add a keyboard, power supply, and enclosure to the assembled motherboard to make it function whereas the first ready-to-go personal computer Apple II was introduced a year later that is in 1977 which became one of the most popular products of Apple Inc. The specification of the computer would look funny now but it was the biggest thing back then
- 1.023 MHz
- 4 KB of RAM
- Audio cassette interface for loading programs and storing data
- Disk II (5.25-inch, 140KB)
- Lo-res (40×48, 16-color)
Hi-res (280×192, 6-color)
- Integer BASIC OS
4) Came up with the greatest inventions iPod, Mac book, iPhone, and iPad
When Jobs came up with the iPhone in 2007 with iOS 1.0 there were no popular smartphones like that in the market only the regular phones with calling and texting features. Yes, some of the phones had some smartphone features but none of them were like the iPhone so with the evolution of iOS, android and other popular operating systems came up for mobile phones. Same as when iPod was introduced none of the world could think of having thousand songs in the pocket and all the other products as well.
5) Fired from his own company
He was driven out from Apple in the year 1985. You would have been thinking how can one get fired of his own company, well as Apple grew he hired someone he thought was very talented to run the company with him. For the first years or so things went well but then their visions of the future began to diverge and eventually they had a falling out. The board of directors chose their sides with the other, so he was out, and very publicly out.
“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”
6) Launched NeXT and Pixar when was ousted from Apple
When he was no more a part of Apple, during the next 5 years he came up with a computer and software company NeXT in addition with another company named Pixar. Pixar went on to create the world’s first computer animated feature film Toy Story which now is the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events Apple bought NeXT. He returned to Apple and the technology he developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current Renaissance.
I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life’s going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.
7) Back to Apple
Jobs was asked to comeback and save the company when they couldn’t find a way to end their series of failed products. He believed that the only thing that kept him going was that he loved what he did. He said
You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.
8) While at Apple Jobs kept his annual salary $1
When he returned to Apple in the year 1997 that is after 12 years of remaining away from the company, he saw that his absence made the company struggle a lot and Apple was drowning so he showed what matters to him more by having an annual salary of $1. He cared about the company more than he would have cared about himself and thereafter all of the best Apple products came in the coming years and Apple was again shining.
Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me.”
Apple has kept flourishing since then. Though we don’t have the great Steve Jobs in this world anymore, but his excellence stays forever. There has been no looking back for Apple Inc. It keeps on launching new and more conceptualized products to make the digital lives of an individual more comfortable.
